The Thing with Feathers releases 'These Drugs', out now

By Madison Avery

The Thing with Feathers, released a new single titled “These Drugs”. The alt-rock band based out of Nashville, is made up of David Welcsh (vocals, guitar), Alex Hendricks (lead guitar), and Chris Roussell (drummer).

The Thing with Feathers formed in 2018 and had their breakthrough the next year. In May 2019, their sophomore single “Figure It Out” gained streams quickly due to its catchy instrumental and lyrics.  The single now has almost 1.5 million streams on Spotify.  Since then they have released an EP and a few more singles to follow.

In the single “These Drugs”, the instrumental sounds upbeat and chipper but Welcsh walks the listeners through a toxic relationship, the perfect example of the sad breakup song with light hearted music. Alongside the release of their new single, the band shared what it means to them, “It’s about being in the worst part of a bad relationship.  When you know it’s over but you’re still hanging on for any hit of the high it used to be.  It’s the slow death of an optimist, only living in glimpses of the past”.

“You’re gonna take your shot, you love to watch me fall apart but I think we both know that this shit is gone,” the lyrics illustrate the idea of a toxic love with one sided feelings and hope. One person in the relationship is still hoping that things will be smoothed out and there is still a chance for it to go back to the way it was before even though deep down they know the relationship is too far gone and there is no fixing it.

The sliver of hope keeps them going and the love they still feel towards the other person because they just can’t bear to let go.  They are stuck on the idea of what the relationship was and not what it has come to.

Hannah Gray Hall directed the music video for the single and created the cover art. Hall has worked with the band on previous projects as well and gave the cover art and video an edgy feel to them with bright red lights and a retro look.

The Thing With Feathers has more to come next year with a second EP on the way.  Additionally on the bands Instagram they have hinted at a potential tour in 2023.

Be on the lookout for what’s to come!
