Debut album from Eloise brings an R&B, soothing sound

UK singer/songwriter Elosie debuts her first album, Drunk on a Flight, and takes listeners on a journey about love, relationships, and change. With a unique sound and all-too-relatable lyrics, Eloise speaks to the soul in this collection of captivating songs.

The album opens with a track of the same name, a spellbinding song about the ebb and flow of moving on. The R&B, jazzy feel of the melody sets up a great entrance to the rest of the album.

Moving into Make it Better, the sound transforms into an upbeat, quick tune that rivals the lyrics, detailing a push and pull in a relationship. Keeping that same upbeat nature follows Forgive You. An absolutely hypnotizing track with a unique combination of Eloise’s gentle vocals, and a groovy sound.

Pretend perfectly captures the emotions behind growing up, and growing out of a relationship, but wanting to hang on to what’s left. The story accompanies a feel-good, windows-down pop song that’s perfect for summer. Her album then slows down with Friends Who Kiss, a melancholy ballad about incompatible love.

Therapist is a standout song with an edge to it, with a story discussing not being an emotional dumping ground for a partner. The lyrics and melody match up perfectly in this catchy tune, with a perfectly placed soft rock influence that hasn’t been heard in the album thus far. I Take It Back carries the edgier tune, with powerful vocals and a heavier sound to match.

Cold As The Sea is a quick, under a minute soft and gentle tune that mimics a lullaby. It takes the listener into In Another Year, a longer, emotional ballad about change, and feeling stuck in life. The lyricism across the album is consistently relatable, touching, and poignant.

Eloise’s vocal talents shine in Vanilla Tobacco, a sultry, groovy love song that was this album’s first single release in November of 2022. Following that is another single, Giant Feelings, that details a heartbreaking story about deserving better in a relationship.

Drunk on a Flight closes with Tired Now, a chill song with a lo-fi, R&B feel. The final lyrics, “When it’s all said and done, God we had fun, but I’m tired now,” perfectly sums up the journey she takes listeners on through the album.

Perfect for fans of Bruno Major and Laufey, Drunk on a Flight will take you through a rollercoaster of emotions. This album encapsulates the sentimentality and emotions behind love, growing up, and heartbreak. The unique combination of music styles paired with Eloise’s empathetic lyrics and alluring vocals makes for a lovely listen.
