PVRIS’ EVERGREEN Expands Boundaries and Bends Genres

PVRIS, the former trio hailing from Massachusetts, has once again demonstrated their musical prowess and artistic growth with their fourth studio album, EVERGREEN. Frontwoman Lynn Gunn has condensed PVRIS into a solo project, where she would begin to push her musical limits and incorporate new sounds into her records. Teasing the release of EVERGREEN, were six forceful singles packed with angst, which is more fitting than ever on this record. The album showcases the band’s evolution while staying true to the dark and atmospheric sound that fans know and love.

“I DON’T WANNA DO THIS ANYMORE” opens the album on an energetic note, encouraging listeners to stay for the whirlwind of emotions that go with the album.

“GOOD ENEMY” is a more pop-motivated track with electronics that will keep you guessing what PVRIS is going to sound like next.

“GODDESS” brings the album into a string of powerful songs. Gunn sings, “I’m on fire and you can’t tame it”, as she exudes confidence and the highest degree of femininity.

“ANIMAL” takes a more devious tone as it explores breaking away from control of all kinds and stepping into, once again, a level of confidence. In similar fashion, “TAKE MY NIRVANA” is an anthem of freedom. The weighted pop song concludes the first half of EVERGREEN, and leads us into a more stripped down and captivating string of songs.

The latter half of the record slips into a more vulnerable and contemplative tone. Gunn showcases her vocal performance on “SENTI-MENTAL”, where we see stronger hints of pop hooks. Following, “ANYWHERE BUT HERE”, draws listeners in, as we hear an emotive lyrical delivery that conveys a sense of longing. “HEADLIGHTS” is another guitar driven track. The lyrics read, “I’m always in my head / I wish that I could feel right”, as Gunn takes us into her head throughout a potential situation ship. We hear the contrast of wanting to get into a more stable place, while wanting to explore what’s ahead.

“LOVE IS A…” has more sultry and sensual undertones in the instrumental as well as the lyrics. The light strings opening the song feel gentle, but as the chords in the track begin to build up, listeners start to feel the more intense passion that this song holds.

With each track under four minutes, the 32 minute album is an easy and enjoyable listen. It mixes rock, electronic, and hints of hip-hop, breaking boundaries for PVRIS. EVERGREEN is a strong album that clearly shows improvement and maturity from previous works. The EVERGREEN tour begins next month! Don’t miss out on this show, as Miss Lynn Gunn will undeniably be putting together a kick ass lineup!
