Conan Gray finds freedom in latest single ‘Winner’

Pop singer Conan Gray has released his new single “Winner,” a deeply personal, piano-heavy track following the release of “Never Ending Song” in May. “Cause there’s no one who ever has done better at makin’ me feel worse.

Unafraid to push the boundaries, Gray is brutally honest in his latest single. Born from late nights thinking of someone who hurt him deeply, the song confronts Gray’s inner monologue and what he wishes he could say. “Yeah, there’s nothing that ever did quite kill me more than what you did, Now you really are the winner, take a bow ‘cause you’re the winner.

The song starts off with a look into Gray’s childhood, mentioning that he left everything behind at only fourteen. Confronting this figure that had such a negative impact on his life, Gray mentions that their actions are unsurprising and something that is obvious to anyone who’s ever met them. As the song progresses so does Gray’s backhanded compliments, singing “Bask inside your victory, my heart that once was beating, now bleeding in the palm of your hand.”

As the second single from his third studio album, listeners are in for an uncensored, honest look into Gray’s memories. Introducing the song on Instagram, Gray says, “I’ve spent my whole life running from any memory of anything that ever hurt me, but I’ve begun to see that there is a certain freedom in recognizing that you’ve been hurt. I hope this song helps you find a little bit of that freedom, love you.

Winner is out now.
