Faye Webster knows what she wants in new single, “Lego Ring”

“Lego Ring”, the new collaboration between Atlanta’s indie darling Faye Webster and triple threat rapper, producer, and songwriter Lil Yachty, has been deemed unpredicted or “the collab we didn’t know we needed” by multiple outlets and fans since it was announced last week. While I'm no psychic myself, I didn’t find them working together too far from believing. Webster got her start in the Atlanta scene through features with artists like Father (head of her first label, Awful Records) and Ethereal.

Lil Yachty has been interacting with her Instagram posts since February when she began the slow but steady album teasing/rollout process: “Making THE record” he assures. Now, nearly a year later, we’re seeing their vision come to life in a single that is undeniably true to both of their artistic reputations.

Faye Webster comes into the first verse with a hustled pace like she simply can’t keep the song to herself anymore: “I want a lego ring/ I want it to hurt my finger” she declares over distorted, percussive guitar. It reminds me a lot of her style during the 2021 record “I Know I’m Funny Haha”, with the guitar specifically progressing in a similar way to the angsty central track “Cheers”.

Good-natured sarcasm and this brilliant shade of blue Webster is frequently seen in seem to also have been ushered over from this era, which feels more consistent and familiar rather than at all repetitive. “Lego Ring” is a short but sweet predecessor to “Underdressed at the Symphony”, Faye Webster’s new record set to release on March 1st: “I was quite literally underdressed at the symphony because I would just decide at the last moment that that’s what I wanted to do” she explains.

The initial immediacy and decisiveness contrasts deeply to the two refrains dipping in and out between verses; a steel guitar whines in near slow motion, complimented by jazz adjacent piano and basslines. Lil Yachty joins in on the shared incentive that “It’s a mood ring/ It’ll pick for me”. The lyrics casually segway into a purely instrumental breakdown the second time around, something Faye Webster is no stranger to.

The song ends quickly and confidently with a solo verse from Lil Yachty where he playfully pays homage to their anticipated collaboration: “Me and you the dream team/ always together like string beans.”

So far each single has stayed true to her stylistic staples in their own respect, while simultaneously feeling like some of her most experimental work yet.
