Peach Pit’s ‘Magpie’ Is A Reflection Of Musical Growth and Maturity

The Vancouver indie-based band is known for blending melancholy with upbeat sounds, creating tracks that leave listeners wanting more. Their brand new album’s name, Magpie comes from the flocks of magpies that the band saw plenty of while on tour in Australia. This collection of tracks touches on love, life, and religion themes. Since their start in Vancouver, the four-piece band has carved a unique space in the indie music scene. With mellow grooves and reflective lyrics, Peach Pit’s music evokes a sense of nostalgia, and their brand new record dives even deeper into this emotional depth, creating an album that feels both intimate and expansive.

The album opens up with "Every Little Thing,” a track that dives into themes such as fixation and vulnerability. The lyrics “Every little thing about you I fixate in the shadows / Been seeming like you're gonna be getting down to me” suggest an almost obsessive admiration the singer has for a certain person but at the same time it reflects how deeply they are drawn to this person, feeling self-conscious about these feelings. With out-of-this-world guitar riffs and a drumming pattern that accompanies the smooth vocals of Neil Smith, the vocalist, and guitarist of this band, this track is a perfect opener for this album and reflects on what’s to come for the next tracks.

St. Mark’s Funny Feeling” serves as a highlight track in this album. With its unique chord progressions and lyrics that take on the emotional toll of separation, the track offers a complex narrative and a sense of artistic decay. The lines, “What good is anyone, honey, without being yours / I did almost all the things I left you for,” bring out the song’s reflective tone and give us the idea of the thought process of leaving to eventually finding out that they lost what mattered to them.

The closing track, “Your Long Black Hair”, reflects on escapism and the passage of time through its lyrics that evoke a desire for connection while going through feelings of loss. “With every day, more than ever few / They’ll slip right from you” are lyrics that perfectly describe the nature of time and its effects on relationships, giving us an idea that the things that matter can slip away from us without a warning in any given time. This song overall weaves together complex themes of love, loss, and the longing for peace. Through its lyrics and Peach Pit’s signature guitar and smooth vocals, this track captures a bittersweet sense of nostalgia and longing.

Magpie is a collection of tracks that perfectly captures the complexity of relationships while at the same time evoking the longing for connections while dealing with self-doubt. Each song offers a unique perspective on love and life which makes it a rich listening experience for fans. With a polished yet raw production, the band’s distinctive sound shines in each of the songs, with enriching vocals from the lead singers to the stunning guitar riffs that linger after the last note has faded. Peach Pit has solidified their place in the indie music scene with this new record, for both fans and casual listeners, this album is a must-listen.
