Keni Titus Delivers a Break Up Anthem in New Single ‘Mistake’

Keni Titus, a 23 year-old singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, just released her newest single “Mistake”. The song begins with a gorgeous guitar and some additional twang. A short pause in production welcomes us to her voice and the confessional story begins. She dives into the details of a relationship where the other is in the wrong: “Didn’t want to say it but you let me down again / I hate the feeling / we were getting better but you had to ruin it / I’m always bleeding.” A built out first verse and more lyrics to express she’s reached a breaking point lead to a chorus with an initial waning feeling.

After the minor slow down, lyrics acknowledge how she’s going to feel now that it’s over. But without a doubt, she knows she was not in the wrong: “One day you’ll call and you’ll say / You know you made a mistake / You made a mistake.” The lead guitar accompanied by drums and steel create an atmosphere of sound. The melody of the chorus has a catchy feel all while guided by her raw, raspy vocal characteristics.

Entering the second verse of the song, with the same tempo from the first, comes a realization she may be better off. Relationships ending can result in clouded emotions, and Keni Titus masterfully displays the journey from that point to thinking you made it out on the other side: “I really hate to say it but I’m feeling better now / It’s finally quiet” “I’m sorry that you’re breaking down but I’m alright / My car’s still driving.” Following shortly after the bridge, the loud chorus enters one last time to circle back to the feelings of missing them. She very openly admits, mixed in with the western and swaying feel in production, that it’s inevitable to miss someone you had loved.
