Poppy Dominates the Metal Scene with new Album “Negative Spaces”
Genre shapeshifter Poppy, is rising to the top of the metal scene with her newest album “Negative Spaces”. Beginning her career on Youtube and embracing pop, Poppy has hopscotched through different genres over the years and for her third album in 2020, she began integrating metal into her music. This year, Poppy has fully embraced metal with her new album as well as collabing with Bad Omens and Knocked Loose earlier this year. ‘Suffocate’, the single with Knocked Loose, has also earned Poppy her second Grammy nomination.
Teaming up with former member of Bring Me the Horizon, Jordan Fish and former member of FEVER 333, Steven Harrison assisted with writing and producing the album. Fish’s flare is evident on the record with bits of metalcore and nu metal however the overall sound is true to Poppy.
Leading single ‘new way out’ had fans hoping that Poppy would follow up with more metalcore and they got their wish. Releasing three more singles as well as announcing the album, fans were ecstatic about the new and improved sound.
‘crystallized’ provides the familiar synth-pop sound Poppy fans are used to, an upbeat track that stands out from the rest. Paired with the release was a second single, ‘the cost of giving up’, which has the perfect contrast of screaming and clean vocals.
Closing out the album with the track ‘halo,’ Poppy sings of the strength of love and standing by someone during the darkest times despite what others think, “Still love you if the light goes out, I could fix your halo”.
“Negative Spaces” is Poppy’s ticket to the top of the metal scene and captures full body screams, synth-pop, heavy breakdowns, and melodic choruses. Each track bleeds into each other seamlessly and the album as a whole is polished to perfection. “Negative Spaces” is available now on all streaming platforms and now fans are anxiously awaiting any news on a potential tour next year.
