Luke Hemmings returns with new single 'Shakes'

Three years later, Luke Hemmings is back with a new solo project. Frontman of pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer has released a new single ‘Shakes’ as well as announcing his new EP boy. This news has sent fans into a supportive, excited frenzy; as the band is currently on a mini hiatus so fans didn’t expect to hear from any of them anytime soon. When Facing the Things We Turn Away From (Hemmings’ first solo album) was such a success amongst the fans that they were so ecstatic to hear Hemmings would be introducing a new project.

Sonically, ‘Shakes’ stays true to the style Hemmings has conjured, however it deeply contrasts the dark and twisty feelings on When Facing the Things We Turn Away From. The single is rather a light and airy love song of sorts, “Honey, I just wanna be yours, wanna be yours, / Inside your dreams tonight / Oh, no, oh, no / Can’t shake this feeling”, Hemmings sings in the chorus, whisking you away delicately, like you’re floating on clouds. Hemmings told Rolling Stone the song was initially born in New York a year and a half ago, beginning with just the chorus. Then just a few months ago the rest of the song was written.

When speaking about boy, Hemmings used the word melancholy to describe the record. Which translates perfectly with the new single. ‘Shakes’ portrays the vibes of watching the city go by on a rain splattered window while you’re sitting in the car with your headphones on, which in itself encapsulates a melancholy vibe.

boy arrives on April 26th and fans couldn’t be more excited to explore this new era. ‘Shakes’ is now available on all streaming platforms and boy is available for pre-order.
