As the summer evenings grow shorter, and the blistering July sun gets colder with each day, teens and young adults everywhere are reminded that summer doesn’t last forever– even if it feels like it does. This summer has been characterized by its excellent new releases, and “Hunting Daysby singer-songwriter Khatumu is the perfect finale to the season.

The recent Yale graduate, Khatumu Tuscherer, only has a few singles in her discography, but each song resonates with her audience in an unprecedented way. Her effortlessly beautiful vocals have the unique ability to capture the attention of her audience, especially in the snippets of sound she posts online. Khatumu was able to create an intense amount of anticipation for her newest single, “Hunting Days,” this way, and the song does not disappoint.

Her raw vocals and incredible producing abilities may lead you to believe that she’s been a passionate musician since birth, but in an interview with the Yale Herald she briefly states that she only recently began creating music in college. During her time at Yale, she was a member of the folk music group, Tangled Up In Blue and the acapella group The Whiffenpoofs. In addition to this, she’s signed with the record label dedicated to student artists at Yale, 17o1 Records.

Khatumu currently has three singles out on streaming platforms, each with their own depictions of relationships, situationships, and the sentiments that come with them. She has an incredible ability to describe these emotions in her lyrics, especially through metaphor and double entendre. Her first single, “Dopamine Cleanse,” is an amazing mix of folk instrumentals and melancholy vocals. Her second single, “Dorm Room,” belongs in its own coming-of-age film, with pulsating beats and an almost indescribable chorus.

Her most recent release, “Hunting Days,” is a step ahead of the rest. The single has the same indie rock edge as Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers in the best way possible. Every aspect of this song fits so well together despite being about such complex emotions. The chorus illustrates passionate feelings of betrayal and anger but is accompanied by an astonishingly uplifting beat. The lyrics “His mom thinks i’m the best thing / well she doesn’t know shit she’s guessing / I hate that you’re not obsessing” are like a blow to the chest as the beat comes in. Khatumu’s works are simply sublime, and I’m on the edge of my seat as I wait to see what more she has in store for us.

Hunting Days is out now on all streaming platforms. Listen to the single here.
