COIN’S ‘I’m Not Afraid Of Music Anymore’ Demonstrates A New Era For The Band

Rising indie alternative band COIN has released their brand new album I’m Not Afraid Of Music Anymore and demonstrates their ability to mix emotions with catchy melodies to create confessional feelings and a range of sounds. When talking about the album with Nashville’s Voice, COIN’s Chase Lawrence explains, “We wondered, ‘Why is it so difficult to say what you mean and mean what you say? We said, ‘Let’s just make an album where the three of us say what we mean, mean what we say, and distill COIN to its simplest, rawest, most authentic form.’ We led with the truth.”

“Take It Or Leave It” has an indie sound that sounds fresh and unique. Lyrics such as “Don’t go breaking my heart / Just tear me apart / Take it or leave it” show a sense of resignation and vulnerability from the band. The lead singer seems to be addressing someone who they have a connection with, implying fears of abandonment and being hurt. The guitar riff on this song adds a rich dynamic sense of movement in the song, evoking a sense of emotion that speaks directly to your soul.

“Slack” is the most COIN-sounding song they have ever released, with soft guitar sounds and their well-known drums that are accompanied by strong vocals, they share their vulnerability with their fans. Not only that, this song appears to replicate sounds from their third album, Dreamland. The song feels like a love letter to the band, tying the band’s journey with a knot, as it references previous songs in lyrics, specifically mentioning “Talk Too Much” and “Crash My Car.” Showing their growth from where they started as a band to where they are right now.

The last track on the record, “Leaving A Light On” is different when compared to other songs in the album. With a softer instrumental melody and calmer vocals that eventually lead up to a more rock sound. “Sometimes it feels like the first time (Ooh) / Sometimes you never say goodbye / Sometimes you never say goodbye / I'm leaving a light on” are lyrics that evoke a sense of nostalgia and hope. The lyrics suggest a theme of freshness and renewal in a relationship, despite the passage of time or repeated moments, there’s a feeling of reliving something with the same intensity and emotion as the first time.

With its catchy melodies, COIN showed their ability to show appreciation for past works while at the same time creating a new unique sound that will leave fans wanting for more. I'm Not Afraid of Music Anymore both redefines COIN as a group, demonstrating their vulnerability and the connection they have with one another and with their fans.
