Gavin McGee Takes Listeners on Emotional Rollercoaster in Latest EP, “What Was Will Be Again”
Hailing from Norwalk, Connecticut, singer-songwriter Gavin McGee displays somber emotion in his sophomore EP: “What Was Will Be Again.” The collection of songs displays an array of emotion, ranging from melancholy reflection to passionate optimism. McGee makes great use of instrumental experimentation throughout the EP, building expertly crafted guitar solos into several of the songs.
In this body of work, It’s clear that McGee has found his unique sound– a stellar combination of alt-rock and indie melodies. This EP belongs in the soundtrack to a midwestern coming of age film. The level of emotion that McGee displays throughout the EP is just right.
The EP begins with “Not a Friend,” which has a pulsating and folky chorus. His vocals are on full display here as he belts the lyrics “That's not a star / It's a plane miles and miles away” in an interesting and gravelly tone. In this country-leaning ballad, McGee sings his heart out as the backing instruments culminate in a way similar to the Kings of Leon, circa 2008.
Throughout the EP, McGee’s heartfelt lyricism starkly contrasts his upbeat instrumentals, and it works.
The lead single, titled “Loan,” explores exploitation from the outside looking in. McGee has a unique way of juxtaposing his heavy lyrics with vibrant sounds, and it’s extremely evident here. He said that the story is about a girl who wants to escape the constant demand for her body, her attention, and her love.
“I Can’t Know” is a perfect depiction of teenage anxiety, starting off almost hesitant, then exploding into a joyous chorus. The song encapsulates the feeling of doing something that scares you, while the music makes you want to jump around without a care in the world.
“Hydrangeas” is a personal favorite– its rich introduction builds into something so unique, yet it feels like home. Sometimes, music has a way of leaving an indescribable impression in the pit of your stomach, and this chorus did exactly that. It made me think about the past– about a memory that isn’t even mine.
The fifth and final song is one of those songs you listen to whilst looking out the window on an overcast, slightly rainy day. “Madison” is filled with interesting vocal lines that close out the project in a great way.
What Was Will Be Again is markedly different from Gavin McGee’s previous works, and it’s clear that he’s found his footing. His growth as an artist is evident in each song, and his storytelling abilities are the makings of a star. If you’re looking for music that makes you feel deeply, this EP is the one for you.
