Abby Powledge Straight to the Heart in New Single “forgive”
“forgive,” the new single from 20 year-old singer-songwriter Abby Powledge has touched the hearts of all ears listening. Following her biggest releases “the way that i am” and “spoiling me,” she’s added another single to her delicate discography. She stated on Instagram in a release post, “the latest season of life has been one of both growth and change, and with that comes a lot of weird conflicting feelings, both wonderful and otherwise. It took me a long time to articulate that.”
And articulate that she does. The single begins with a warm toned acoustic melody, almost holding your hand as you walk alongside her. An immediate entrance of the sadness she feels comes out within the very first lyrics. “I'm ghosting my hometown friends / And none of it's on purpose.” The song ventures into the idea of the guilt you navigate all throughout life, from growing apart from friends to the habits you grow into but know you should avoid. Abby’s voice remains raw through the entire song, having live tracked the guitar and vocals then building the rest of the atmospheric production around it. The journey the song takes of every reason in life to feel guilt comes to a contemplating moment of all she is doing and not doing, “and maybe I've tried / All that I could / Maybe I've changed / Or maybe I should.” The chorus comes full circle resolving in a realization, singing “'Cause I'm getting tired / Inside my own skin / So maybe I owe it to myself to forgive.”
Following the first chorus, a soft drum kicks in and swings you through to the next spiral of what to add to the list of things to feel guilty about. “Cause then I'm awake all night / Obsessed with my appetite / And I wonder why I'm sick in the morning.” Some whines of strings bring in a new level of emotion leading up to the bridge “I beat myself up again / Make up some consequence / Knowing that isn't productive or positive / Years of my life I've spent craving repentance / Resenting the fact that I go back / Again and again, and again.” Harmonies flood as the song solos back to her singular voice and guitar, realizing she’s done all she could and can give herself some grace.
