Pop Princess MARINA Returns with Single “BUTTERFLIES”
You may know MARINA, aka Marina Diamandis, for her 2012 smash hits “Primadonna” and “Bubblegum Bitch” under the name Marina and the Diamonds. It’s been four years since 2021’s Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land, and with the release of “BUTTERFLY” in 2025, it makes fans wonder— is a new album in the works?
Marina seems to exude a shifted energy on “BUTTERFLY,” one that feels like her outlook on life has altered. She seems to have found security in the freedom of recognizing emotional pain and moving on from it, and instead, embracing herself. The track pulls many of the elements that fans know and love her for so well. The influence of hyper-pop mixed with her angelic voice bring it to life, making it feel like it’s a tangible being lifting you up. Somehow, it’s full of hope despite the rather sad lyrics. “Sometimes people gonna let you down / Not everybody's meant to stick around / I feel the pain and you feel it too.” It oozes a sureness that’s rather hard to find in music. As the song progresses, she sings, “Yeah, I'm a butterfly / You just never see my energy.”
I interpret this as embracing the power of moving in silence. There’s something to say about making progress, healing, and moving forward for yourself and yourself only. The message reminds me that just because you are not physically seeing a change does not mean it hasn’t happened. I also enjoy that she gives the rather overused cliche of butterflies and “emerging from the chrysalis,” per se, a new life. The message of the chorus in tandem with the absolutely ethereal vocals behind it seem to bring words to a tangible life, something you can feel within yourself.
I couldn’t be more grateful that MARINA is making her descension back into the world of music— we’re in desperate need of some fresh music on the pop airwaves. She’s returned to her roots sonically with a perfect mix of pop and authenticity that is unique to her. Let’s hope 2025 brings a new full length project!
