With every step Alice Phoebe Lou takes, a trail of mystifying fairy dust seems to take the place of where a shoe mark would be. Her new single “You and I” entices its listeners into a deeper crevice of her mind that is sprinkled with glittering synths and self-reflective lyricism. With an impressive collection of five albums under her belt, Lou dives into each project like it’s her first. The Berlin-based singer-songwriter took her hand at self-producing for the stripped-down track, which according to Lou, is only the beginning of taking the reins behind her production.
After finishing up support for Clairo on her CHARM tour, three nights at the Lodge Room in LA, and a Red Rocks show for Remi Wolf’s opening slot, Lou is gearing up to headline a European tour beginning the end of this month. This also means she has a few treats up her sleeve, including her new release “You and I.”“‘You and I’ speaks of longing and surrendering in love, it’s a confession and a prayer, a declaration that this is where we are and want to be and let’s stop holding back and dive deeper into everything together,” she explains.
“We wander together / There are so many places we could be / But we’re here” Lou croons over acoustic whispers right out the gate. It feels like performing a gentle plea for someone in a vast room, its open and airy nature sending Lou’s vocals echoing against the floorboards and wall panels. The other person’s eyes fall only on her as she sings of her distaste over a lack of communication, a vulnerable thread that tends to get caught in relationships. Instead, she says it as it is: “And if you wanna go on loving me / You better show it / Don’t keep it to yourself.” She’s learned the importance of making things crystal clear when it comes to what she needs, and bleeds for the same to be returned. While its message is direct, its delivered with tender hands and an assurance to the other person that they are all she wants. “And I’m hoping / Wondering / Hoping / Wondering” she trails off in the song’s final lines, as if unsticking the seal to leave things open-ended.
Lou demonstrates a masterclass in songwriting that embraces her full breath of emotions. Through fluid, digestible lyricism, she manages to captivate even the passive listening ear. With qualities of consistency and longevity that have been proven throughout the years, we’re convinced her next project may be her best yet.
