Is there anything as catastrophic as when you find out your ex is getting married? You might know the feeling: Your stomach drops, your heart rate spikes, and in the throes of an emotional spiral, you fumble around, grasping for any relief. Well, look no further: Sydney Ross Mitchell’s newest single is here.

“Pale Blue Eyes” begins with an intro that evokes a stripped-back, more melancholic “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac, which pairs nicely with Mitchell’s angelic singer-songwriter image that would be right at home in the ’70s. The Texas native also brings some Southern twang to her new single, drawing out notes softly and earnestly and deepening the track’s instrumentation with the ache of the steel guitar.

In teasing her new song, Mitchell posted on TikTok that “i waited 10 years for a guy who’s about to get married to someone else and all i have to show for it is this song.” The lyrics reflect this heartache, with the singer recounting a dream of her ex “Dancing with a girl in white” and the subsequent emotional turmoil of realizing an old love has moved on so completely that they’re getting married.

Throughout the track, Mitchell’s voice remains hypnotic, tender, and quietly resigned to her fate of being the one being left behind. When the chorus rushes in, you’re immediately swept up in its sweet devastation: “There will be babies with pale blue eyes / And someone who loves you like I've loved you / All of my life / The veil is thinner some nights.”

As with many of her songs, the LA-based singer combines dream pop and indie folk with the heartfelt, deeply personal lyricism of classic country artists, and she is in that same camp of achingly beautiful songwriters such as Lizzy McAlpine and Sarah Kinsley. Like them, she is savvy about the modern strategy of song promotion: Flood the algorithm with teasers to get people hooked weeks before its release. And boy, does it work — Mitchell’s TikTok page has over 11 million likes. The harder part is delivering a song people will continue to have on repeat after all that online anticipation, and she nails it with “Pale Blue Eyes.”

For those caught up in the cruel tangle of unrequited love, there often aren't many comforts, but having music like Mitchell’s new single is certainly a bittersweet consolation. “Pale Blue Eyes” is sure to become an essential track for warm summer nights of quiet longing.

Mitchell is on the road next month for her first-ever headline tour in Paris, London, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
