As the days grow longer, temperatures begin to rise, and spring fades into summer, now is the perfect time to throw caution to the wind and do what excites you most– even if that means making a few mistakes along the way. In Beabadoobee’s new single, the indie-pop artist reflects on some of her most spontaneous and toxic decisions from the past. “Take a Bite” is the lead single on her upcoming third album, and it’s only a taste of the raunchy music to come.

The song gained immense popularity after Beabadoobee teased a snippet of it on TikTok, which subsequently went viral and had the masses begging for more. When it was revealed to be part of a larger body of work, fans realized that this new album would be a major departure from her previous releases. Beabadoobee’s typical soft-girl sound and fanciful lyrics are most commonly recognized in her popular songs such as “Glue Song” and “The Perfect Pair”, but “Take a Bite” is markedly darker, and more mature.

The twenty three year-old artist has been a major component of the indie music scene since 2017 with the release of her song “Coffee”, when she was only seventeen. In more recent projects, she experiments with heavier sounds, especially the song “Talk” on Beatopia, where she toys with synth, vocal distortion, and rock instrumentals. Now, it’s clear that she aspires to break out of the infantilizing box that young female musicians are so often put into by coming into her own with her newest album entitled This Is How Tomorrow Moves.

“Take a Bite’s” driving introductory guitar melody bears close similarity to The All American Rejects’ “Gives You Hell”, giving the song an early 2000s alt-rock edge. In an interview with Elle Magazine, Bea explains that, “Lyrically, the song is about just acknowledging my side of relationships where I can be toxic.” This is especially exemplified in the second verse where she sings “It gets harder to breathe / But I take it and I want it and I love when it bleeds”, in a perfectly distinct cadence. Her lyrics in this single toe the line between hope and melancholy as she both relishes in the best moments from past relationships and remembers where those relationships went wrong.

Her rock songs are always fan favorites, so it’s no surprise that her third album, or Bea3 (a name it was affectionately given by her fansbase), is so highly anticipated. With the release of  “Take a Bite” beadabdoobee remains a powerhouse in the indie music scene, and this new era of music has fans on the edge of their seats.

Be sure to keep an eye out for Beabadoobee’s newest album This Is How Tomorrow Moves which comes out on August 16th.
