Get a Tan to Burgundy’s Sweltering New Single “Sunbleach”
A song named “Sunbleach” . . . released in July . . . about a summer fling? Okay, yes, you’re probably not surprised, but this song of the summer has an unexpected twist on the classic beach tune.
Burgundy is a Montreal-based alternative artist who was named one of SOCAN’s “Five Rising Stars of Quebec R&B and Soul to watch in 2025.” He’s known for combining atmospheric production with thoughtful lyrics, and “Sunbleach” is as vibey as a song can be.
“Sunbleach” is a song made for sweltering, languid days so hot that your energy turns inward to your thoughts because it’s too hot to actually do anything. Bendy, reverby synths and an energetic beat give this track its expected beachy flair and fit into Burgundy’s penchant for manipulating the set structure of his melodies into undulating waves. Just when you think you know the song, Burgundy throws in a sonic cutback.
Over-exposed emotions can create faded feelings, but there’s still an air of optimism for the future. This track captures the trapped heat of trying to get over an old flame when a new romance is also sizzling at the same time—“I said it couldn’t be, my heart is overseas, but our clothes are on the floor.” Burgundy’s distorted vocals on the chorus feel like you’ve dipped your head underwater while a radio is playing on the pool’s edge, providing a much-needed relief to the sweltering emotional conflict.
“Sunbleach” is the second single released (alongside “Marathon,” which was promoted with an actual 5km run in Montreal) ahead of Burgundy’s upcoming EP Asterisk. If running’s not your thing, to get an immersive experience of “Sunbleach,” you can simply lay by the pool.
