Finn Wolfhard Confronts With Verve in “Objection!”

“I heard you being led by the wind / How many times? / How many faces and places are for me?” Finn Wolfhard’s words inquisitively float atop jangly guitars. As the final chapter of the singer’s hit Netflix series Stranger Things approaches and the release of his debut solo album Happy Birthday inches closer, each single has thus far tapped into the different hues of both his sonic bank and conceptual storytelling. His third single, “Objection!”  strikes with an addictive, garage rock groove that lends another piece to the forthcoming nine-track puzzle. It’s no wonder the song is reminiscent of a Twin Peaks song, with one of its producers being vocalist and guitarist of the band Cadien Lake James.

After committing to the challenge of writing 50 songs by the end of 2022, Wolfhard continues to hit the mark on fluid and poignant lyricism that catches you in a double-take. “I felt you on the first day of fall / It's so consuming and the booming of your voice is just for me” sheds a light on the singer’s skillful prose as he blankets the blame over a voice he realized had been haunting his narrative. While thick with masterful songwriting, he’s simultaneously managed to master a clever pacing of the track’s story; he’s fit enough emotional context into the repetition of the verses alone: “The snow is starting to fall, circling Waterloo / The coat that’s soaked from the bar / The cursed witches’ brew / The happiness of it all, set back by you.” Wolfhard’s fuzzed vocals create a texture that complements the bouncier shape of the track, concocting something that feels older than its time.

Accompanied by a music video directed by Marcus Mazzulla, its visual components feel as flushed out as Wes Anderson’s stills. Shot on 16mm film, we see a bundled Wolfhard strumming an acoustic in the middle of a snowy plain in British Columbia. “The ‘Objection!’ video is dedicated to my grandfather who passed away soon after we made it. He was a geologist and spent much of his life outdoors, and shooting this video reminded me of him. He was an amazing man!’” Wolfhard shares on Instagram.

You can listen to the new single “Objection!” now on all of your favorite streaming platforms. Be sure to catch Finn Wolfhard’s debut solo project Happy Birthday, a nine-track collection set to release on June 6th. The singer will be debuting his album on THE OBJECTION! Tour, which will stop by a few cities in North America and Canada.
