Breakout artist Grentperez previews Lollapalooza set and teases new music
Breakout artist, grentperez, is everything that’s fresh in the music industry. Coming down from a world tour with Rex Orange County, and a newly released single “Room For You” in July, we sat down with him before his debut Lollapalooza performance about the setlist and the future.
You wrapped a world tour with Rex Orange County. How does a big festival like this compare to your regular tour stops; both for your daily routine and setlist?
There's just always the chance of meeting someone that you look up to, which is cool. I think I always have respect for festivals, and the people that put the festivals on are just crazy, you know, it's a big headache. So props to everybody for coming together and putting this on.
What would you tell yourself a year ago now that you’re performing at Lollapalooza?
I would say: ‘Lock in. You’ve got some big things coming up, stop messing around. But still have fun.‘
How do you feel that you've grown throughout this past journey of making your music?
I feel like I've matured. I'm starting to take decisions more seriously. I used to, I still do, I guess, run this carefree attitude to making decisions. Make the decision now, deal with the consequences later. It kind of got me where I am, but nowadays I feel like I might as well try and make the right decisions. That's kind of the stuff that I've grown into in a way, which is a little bit boring, but I mean, it's safe. I'm starting to think of the future stuff. I’ve started to look forward, I got new music coming out, so I'm really excited.
Do you feel like your music has changed over time?
It's definitely gone through phases. I'll always be experimental with what I sound like. Right now, I'm working on some different stuff. I'm playing the piano on some new stuff on my set later on, and there's this one track that's super, super groovy, it's like MJ-esque, kind of like, Drive Me Crazy by Lil Yachty. It’s that kind of vibe. So I’m playing around with that kind of stuff.
That was my next question: what songs are you most excited to perform on stage?
Yeah it’s definitely that one, it’s called ‘Peace of Mind’. There’s no date for release yet, we’re just doing a cold tease at the moment.
