Hinterland 2026: Must-See Artists and Activities

As one of the Midwest’s premier independent music festivals, Hinterland has built a reputation of bringing together some of the biggest names in indie, folk, rock, and alternative music while maintaining the intimate atmosphere that has defined the festival since the beginning. Returning to Saint Charles, Iowa, this summer, Hinterland once again delivers an exciting lineup paired with amazing food vendors, markets, and camping in this four-day celebration of music.

Since its inaugural festival in 2015, Hinterland has remained independently owned, and the team puts a large amount of care into making sure the festival is for the fans, prioritizing artist curation and fan experience over any corporate influence.

Along with the music, Hinterland offers HinterMarket, which is a collection of merchandise vendors and activities. A few vendors include Azapaza who will be offering India imports, tapestries, festival garments, scarves, and more, and Lucid Wood, who will be offering hand-carved jewelry using wood, antler, and bone.

The festival also provides on-site camping, which allows access to the Campfire Stage, which hosts more intimate late-night sets after the main stage closes. Camping options are available for purchase on the official Hinterland website.

While the headliners this year are sure to draw massive crowds and excitement, the artists I’m most excited for are further down the bill. CMAT has continued to establish herself as one of the sharpest and funniest songwriters in modern country-pop. I had the pleasure of catching her tour in April and learned that her live performance is phenomenal and a must-see as well.

Geese have become one of the most exciting and unpredictable rock bands today, and their high-energy performances seem tailor-made for festival stages. The young band from NYC is scheduled to play over 15 festivals this year, and their sets so far have proven that their recent jump to indie rock super-stardom is well deserved.

Few bands have risen as quickly as Geese, but Wet Leg is one of them. Their lyricism and stage presence have made them one of indie rock's defining acts. Since breaking out with their self-titled debut, the Isle of Wight group has earned widespread critical acclaim and built a reputation for charismatic live performances. Their Hinterland set is expected to be a fan favorite.

Rounding out my must-see list is Santigold, whose genre-blending catalog has influenced alternative pop and hip-hop for well over a decade.

Hinterland promises plenty of unforgettable moments with a lineup that celebrates both rising artists and influential veterans. Tickets are available for purchase here.
