Lollapalooza Chile 2023: The Rookies, The Must-Sees, and The All-Stars

In 2011, Perry Farrell decided to bring his infamous music festival to other places in the world. He started by creating Lollapalooza Chile, an event with the same structure as the one held in Grant Park, Chicago, with lineups that include both world famous musicians and local up-and-coming artists. We have listed some of our favorite acts that you should definitely see if you are down to make a quick trip to South America this spring.

THE ROOKIES

Suki Waterhouse

Although not new to stardom, the English singer, actress and model has just now begun to show up in multiple lineup posters around the world. Her single “Good Looking” continues to be one of the most used sounds on TikTok, and her new show “Daisy Jones and The Six” is set to premiere on March 3rd. Suki will perform at Parque Cerrillos on Saturday the 18th.

Pailita

Originally from Punta Arenas, one of the cities closest to Antarctica, this urban artist whose real name is Carlos Raín Pailacheo, has taken the South American music scene by storm. At 23 years old and having started his career only in the past year, he’s the author of multiple Latin American hits and doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon. Pailita is performing on Friday the 17th.

Benito Cerati

If you’re even slightly familiar with music in Spanish, you have most likely heard of the band Soda Stereo, and of its late front man, Gustavo Cerati. Well, now his 29-year-old son has decided to try his luck in the music world too, putting out music as recent as last year. Benito will be performing on Saturday the 18th.

Fred Again..

Even though Fred Again.. brings back some sour memories (my ex boyfriend was obsessed with him!), there is no denying that he has changed the way we understand dance music and production. He recently even won a Brit award for Best Producer, and will now make his way to South America this March, performing on Sunday the 19th.

Conociendo Rusia

Another local act, but from the country’s neighbor, is Argentinian indie-rock artist Mateo Sujatovich. After making an appearance during Primavera Sound Chile (headlined by Lorde and Arctic Monkeys), Conociendo Rusia is making his way back from the other side of the Andes mountain. Their set is scheduled for Friday the 17th.

THE MUST-SEES

Wallows

When the Lolla Chile lineup for 2020 was announced, I cried when my best friend read their name (this is a true story, I am this lame and emotional). As we all know, life was canceled that year so I didn’t get to see one of my favorite bands live in my own country, but this time they were back on the list, and will even have an Aftershow the following week. Wallows is scheduled to perform on Sunday the 19th, and their sideshow will be on Tuesday the 21st as part of their Tell Me That It’s Over Tour.

Conan Gray

One of Dan Nigro’s children (producer for Olivia Rodrigo, Sky Ferreira, Caroline Polacheck) got a big slot on the Chilean lineup, appearing on the second row for Saturday the 17th. As one of Gen Z’s most relatable songwriters, he will hopefully be able to also mesmerize a crowd that has been known to consist of a lot of Gen Xers and Boomers. We believe in you Conan!

Dominic Fike

Although Dom’s stardom got even bigger than expected when he landed a role as Elliot in the hit HBO series Euphoria, his musical talent is where he really knows how to shine. And even though he hasn’t released any new music since 2020 (because we don’t talk about that weird Elliot song), the South American crowd has been hoping to see him come down to visit for a long time now, and his set promises to be one of the attendees’ favorites.

Kali Uchis

The American-Colombian is visiting the Latin American region for the first time, and is expected to have one of the most popular sets. With spanglish lyrics and an urban sound, Kali, born Karly-Marina Loaiza, was expected to hopefully bring Omar Apollo on stage with her, until he stepped down from the festival after being announced as SZA’s opener on her SOS tour.

Yungblud

The 25-year-old British musician was also expected to attend the 2020 version before things fell apart. Dom’s politically-charged music should fit in very well with the Chilean crowd, as the themes in his songs resemble a lot of the topics this generation worries and fights about. YUNGBLUD is expected to perform on Sunday the 19th.

ALL-STAR TEAM

Billie Eilish

Billie is probably one of the most anticipated artists to get to Chile’s side of the world. Her “Where Do We Go?” World tour was also one of those that were supposed to stop by a few Latin American countries in 2020, and now Billie’s fans are finally getting the opportunity to see one of the biggest artists of today live. Billie Eilish’s set is scheduled for Friday the 17th.

Lil Nas X

With performances that seem to impress more each time, Georgia-native Montero is set for a treat with an audience that is known to go crazier than most (for better or for worse). I am personally very glad he got a headliner spot instead of one in the following rows, since his shows are most definitely worthy of closing out a major stage. Lil Nas X will perform on Friday the 17th.

Rosalía

Even when her comments on Latin culture have caused controversy among the Hispanic community, Rosalía seems to be one of the region’s favorite artists. Last year she went on a sold out tour and her followers couldn’t be happier knowing that she’s coming back so soon. She is headlining on Saturday the 18th alongside Drake, and hopefully we will see her at Lollapalooza Chicago next.

The 1975

Everyone’s favorite messy (and sometimes problematic) band is not new to the Chilean scene. They have made an appearance at both the 2017 and 2019 versions of the festival, and also brought down their 2017 tour to the country. Although a little lower on the lineup, they’re most likely to hold one of the biggest audiences of the weekend on Sunday the 19th.

Tame Impala

Did you guys know that Tame Impala is only one guy? The one and only Kevin Parker is coming back to the South American festival after performing seven years ago during the 2016 version. Gaining a closing slot for Sunday night, and therefore being one of the closers of the entire event, I’m hoping Tame Impala’s show is one of the best ones we’ve seen in a while.

Blink-182

The only punk/rock headliner is also one of the most emblematic names, being the act with the longest career. With bands like Fall Out Boy recently making comebacks, Blink-182 is visiting a crowd that is willing to reconnect with their younger, rebel years. New fans will also finally get a chance to see the band for the first time in their lives, making their set probably one of the biggest in the event’s history.
