Pride month spotlight; Celebrate these 7 artists

The roots of pride rights movements date all the back to the early 1900’s. Today, millions of people celebrate the LGBTQ+ community with parades, flags, and lots of love. The month of June is about self-affirmation, equality, dignity, and increased visibility for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. These 7 music artists are idolized by music lovers world wide for representing the community.

Troye Sivan

27 year old singer-songwriter Troye Sivan, began his career on Youtube but quickly gained popularity when he started releasing music. Several of his songs charted as well as being nominated for a Golden Globe award. Sivan confirmed his second album Bloom was inspired by his then boyfriend. The Australian singer also contributed to the soundtrack for Love, Simon , with the song ‘Strawberries & Cigarettes’. Sivan teamed up with Calvin Klein this year for his new Feel Pride campaign, which consists of a collection of jeans, underwear, footwear, swimwear, and accessories. 

Girl in Red

Marie Ulven Ringheim aka Girl in Red began her career on soundcloud, releasing her first single ‘I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend’. After signing a recording contract in 2019, Girl in Red became popular rather quickly, being nominated for several awards and even touring with Taylor Swift for multiple U.S. shows. 

Leith Ross

Leith Ross came out as gay while in college then two years later came out as transgender. Ross went viral on Tiktok with their song ‘We’ll Never Have Sex’ in August 2021. The song now has over 41 million streams on Spotify. Shortly after they signed with a label, they began touring with artists like Lord Huron and Helena Deland. Ross has been described as “Gen Z’s new favorite indie songwriter”. 

Boygenius

Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Phoebe Bridgers of boygenius are all a part of the queer community. A lot of young people look up to the three piece supergroup, they don’t shy away from who they are in their music. During an interview Bridgers did with Vogue she said she’s “so proud to be the queer representation her younger self needed”. 

Måneskin

The Italian rock group is the perfect example of embracing who you are. Bassist Victoria de Angelis and drummer Ethan Torchio are a part of the LGBTQ+ community. Front man Damiano David and Guitarist Thomas Raggi show great support to the community as well, pushing to break societal norms. All members confidently flaunt themselves around donned in “feminine” clothing and makeup. 

Josh Kiszka

Front man Josh Kiszka of Greta Van Fleet recently took to Instagram to share he’s been “in a loving, same sex relationship” with his partner for the past 8 years and shared organizations for the LGBTQ+ community. Kiszka said “It’s imperative that I speak my truth for not only myself, but in hopes to change hearts, minds, and laws in Tennessee and beyond.” Kiszka received overwhelming love and support on his post from thousands of people. His bandmates showed support for the community as well, drummer Danny Wagner posted photos on Instagram last June of him wearing a pride inspired makeup look. 

Dove Cameron

Actor and singer Dove Cameron had her single ‘Boyfriend’ go viral on Tiktok, really jump starting her music career. Cameron says she identifies as queer, before she came out she was nervous about what people would think but ended up just dropping it and posting about it.
