Ain’t I a Woman

Last month, we celebrated the history and contributions of Black people in America. This month, we are doing the same for women. Here at Off The Record, we would like to show the appreciation we feel for those we have gotten to celebrate with during both months, Black women. As vocalists, producers, songwriters, and endlessly more, Black women continue to raise the bar in music today. This playlist only begins to scratch the surface, but let us shine a light on some Black women dominating our rotations year-round.

“I Feel Different Every Day” by chlothegod

Although she first gained recognition following the release of her debut single, “Camille,” in 2023, chlothegod continues to justify her rise. “I Feel Different Every Day” is the commanding title track from chlothegod’s latest EP, released just last month. Filled to the brim with angst, this song builds tension from start to finish, culminating in the cathartic release we feel in the final minute. Be sure to catch her rocking out live as she embarks on her first-ever headline tour commencing just next month.

“Lights Out” by Santigold

What would this playlist possibly be without the magical touch of Santigold? Whether she’s releasing solo projects, producing for Lily Allen, or making guest appearances on tracks by Tyler, the Creator and GZA, for years, Santigold has been an omnipresent force unfit for just one genre or creative label. Gracing her self-titled album gifted to us in 2008, “Lights Out” is just one track that has earned its title as a spring and summer staple. As the sun makes its long-awaited appearance wherever you might be reading from, let the effervescence of this song set the tone for the brighter days ahead.

“Saturday” by Annahstasia

For my fellow yearners, this track is for you. ”Saturday” is a raw and confrontational vocal performance, with every note weathered by emotion. Soulful folk artist, Annahstasia, allows her heart to bleed between the lines, infusing the track with a gut-punching intensity that is unrelenting. Lose yourself in her current discography now, as her debut LP, TETHER, is releasing in June of this year and is destined to impress.
