Project Prep: LAUNDRY DAY
Brooklyn, New York - April 21st, 2023
Taking a Trip Back to Prep School with LAUNDRY DAY
After two train transfers and a bus ride, I found myself standing in line outside of a house in Brooklyn surrounded by people in prep school inspired outfits. From plaid skirts to dress shirts and ties, everyone looked like they were ready for the bell to ring in homeroom.
As I approached the line, I saw five guys dressed in what looked like school uniforms hopping around and talking with people in line. People started mingling as doors opened and everyone shuffled into the house.
It was a small intimate affair with no more than 100 in attendance. Talking with some people, many explained how they had been following Laundry Day since their LaGuardia days and others mentioning how they’re friends brought them along.
Cave Collective knew how to host a house party. As the first opener, Quiet Luke, prepped his DJ set, there was a merch stand for people to browse around and food and drinks for sale. The best part (and my favorite) was the chess tables. I stumbled on a concentrated guy seeming like he was playing by himself since his partner was missing. After going up to him and introducing myself, he turned out to be Sawyer Nunes, one of Laundry Day’s members.
Nunes invited me to play chess with him and despite not ever having played before, he patiently taught me all the rules. Ultimately, it ended in a stalemate (though I’m pretty sure he was going easy on me). Once our match was finished, Caroline Meade and her band performed their incredible set.
The sun had set at that time while their set is ending and the last of everyone is trickling in. Her set ended with everyone cheering and ready for LAUNDRY DAY to take the stage.
As the five of the members started setting up, the crowd was buzzing. Some were talking amongst themselves mentioning how they knew them from high school and others were new listeners, excited to find a new favorite band. They played songs old and new and some never heard live before. A crowd-favorite song off the setlist was their new single We All Gotta Find a Reason.
After their set was finished, people stayed behind mingling and talking with the band members about their music and asking for photos. Each guy was incredibly down to earth and had balls of energy. Their energy was infectious and had everyone leave the party with huge smiles on their faces. I’m so glad I went and met so many incredible people from the performers to the fans in the crowd.
I never thought I’d say I had the time of my life in prep school.
