The Thing Brings Electric Energy to Jammin’ Java

washington, d.c. -- april 30th, 2024

During the final show on their North American tour, The Thing brought more than high-intensity rock to venue Jammin’ Java, they created an atmosphere of pure unique musicality coupled with their booming presence. Zane Acord, Jack Bradley, and Michael Carter started The Thing while in high school, later adding drummer Lucas Ebeling ahead of their sophomore album The Thing Is, released in February 2024. Born in New York City, the band emanates the powerful forces of those before them -- The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol -- yet cultivates their own singular style through their constant display of performance.

The Thing kicked off their show with “You’re The One,” a Sonic Boom cover also recorded on their album The Thing Is. The Ebeling’s steady drum beat paired with the blaring electric guitar strums immediately set the energy high in the venue.

Perhaps what sets The Thing apart the most though, was their continual supply of art. Never once did the band pause, halt, or falter as they blazed through their songs, maintaining the excitement festering in the air and holding their audience captive.

From their second album, The Thing also played fan favorites like “Neptunne,” “Midnight,” and “Wanted War.” Their distinct grunge sound, with Acord signing into a mic clouded by the instruments around him, kept the crowd dancing along to the beat.

About halfway through their hour-long set list, Ebeling showcased his skillful drum abilities with a heart-pouding solo that bled straight into another track. The Thing also played pieces from their first album Here’s The Thing, like “Dixie Queen” and “Beige Bouquet.”

The major electric riffing combined with the constant influx of artistry made The Thing’s show at Jammin’ Java a true night of rock ‘n roll.
