A True Lyricist: Greg Freeman Performs in Nashville
Nashville, Tennessee - December 16th, 2025
One of the most prominent artists in the alternative folk scene, Greg Freeman, landed at The Blue Room at Third Man Records in Nashville on Tuesday night. To start the night, LA-based band Jawdropped performed their EP, Just Fantasy. Their sound a mix of booming noise with some slow-core sprinkled in, making it an undeniable headbanger. Following Jawdropped, Greg Freeman and his full man band, including five other musicians, featuring a violinist, a saxophonist, and even a pedal guitar, joined the stage.
Freeman played songs from both of his albums, starting with “Point and Shoot” on his newest album, Burnover, which was released in August this year. Following in numerical order down the album, playing the next two, “Salesman” and “Rome, New York,” then playing songs from his later album, I Looked Out, from 2022. A favorite song off that album is “Long Distance Driver,” a song about finding connection in a world that's hard to navigate. During that song, Freeman brings out his harmonica and continues to stun the audience by playing the harmonica and guitar at the same time, which felt like a hint of Neil Young. While listening, there was a bit of MJ Lenderman and a cross of Horse Jumper of Love, especially with the song “Curtain”. A song that should follow you into the new year from Freeman’s earliest album is “Come and Change My Body” which references leaving your personal pain behind and beginning a renewal stage. Freeman is truly vulnerable through his lyrics, “Come and take the dim light breath from my lungs / You can break me open, I don’t really / Care about anything at all / See these bones entangled / What am I? What do I become / All at once, there’s nothing in the middle / Holding up the sun.” Freeman is truly a lyricist and an incredibly talented musician to top it off.
Their tour runs through the end of January from the midwest and later ending in Boston, including the following openers: Golomb, Carriers, and Sasha Cay. Soak in the music.
