A Look Inside DWLLRS First Headlining Tour

DWLLRS, pop duo project from California, stop through Carrboro, NC on the Cameraman tour. The Cameraman album, released at the end of January, is DWLLRS’s debut album; stacked with a cultivation of singles from the last few years as well as new tracks to share.

Joey and Bren, the brains behind DWLLRS, started this project in a college dorm room. During the show, Bren opens up about his dark past; loss of a family member, losing himself, feeling lack of hope until he met Joey in college. At age 19, Joey opened his eyes to the world of music, and Bren channeled these dark feelings into music. This band expresses what it means to pour one’s heart out into their music, and make the audience feel it too.

One of the songs produced in their college dorm includes their hit song, Blue Spirits. This song, which they originally released as a single in 2022, got the crowd the most excited.

With a small, intimate venue such as the Cats Cradle Back Room, options may be limited to make the space feel like one’s own. DWLLRS owned the stage, using the ‘Cameraman’ name as a guideline to create a show with interesting visuals including carefully timed video and light with the song at play. Each song paired with a visualizer and lyrics; a scene that reminds me of an intimate karaoke bar.

The creator of these beautiful visuals are unclear, but I would love to give major props to them. Similar visuals can be found on the DWLLRS Youtube, as many songs from the Cameraman album have coordinating lyric videos.

Doan, the opening act on the Cameraman tour, was unfortunately feeling under the weather during their stay in North Carolina. Matt, DWLLR’s touring drummer and college friend of Bren and Joey, was asked to perform a few songs under his solo project, BOYTEARS. For music with a similar sound and gut-wrenching lyrics.
