mxmtoon and a Magical Night at The Wiltern
los angeles, california
Not even a rare LA downpour could wash away the excitement buzzing through The Wiltern as mxmtoon took the stage for the biggest LA show of her career. Touring in support of her latest album, Liminal Space, she transformed the theater into something out of a dream—an outdoor-inspired stage complete with glowing windows shifting from sunsets to starry skies.
A soft, atmospheric tape track kicked things off before she stepped into the spotlight with “dramatic escape.” From there, it was all energy. “Okay, let’s raise the energy!” she grinned before launching into “i hate texas,” feeding off the audience’s wild enthusiasm. Then came “prom dress,” her breakout hit, which she playfully teased—“Anyone know this one?” The crowd’s response was deafening, voices joining her as she strummed her ukulele.
Every song felt like a conversation, whether it was the cathartic beats of “seasonal depression” or the hypnotic pulse of “the situation.” Even as the storm raged outside, the mood inside shifted seamlessly from reflective to electric. “god?” hushed the crowd in a moment of introspection, only for “elevator” and “now’s not the time” to lift the energy right back up.
A nostalgic “VHS” interlude set the stage for the final stretch, culminating in “dance (end of the world).” As the last notes rang out, the entire room moved as one, lost in the euphoria of the moment.
