In a pod of emerging artists looking to break into the charts this past year alone, let it be known that Ally Evenson is the real deal. On Wednesday night, the Detroit singer-songwriter played an opening slot for Daisy The Great’s sold-out LA date on their BALLERINA Tour at The Moroccan Lounge.

Just as her signature blue-eared crocheted beanie signifies an entrance into the universe of Blue Super Love– her intoxicating debut album that swirls with sweet cynicism– Evenson took no time to spare pulling the audience in with her. Her cutting vocals for the first track “Shitty Heaven” collided with the room’s silence to create hypnotic tension between her and the crowd. Its opening lines, “I’ll swim against the tide as long as I can breathe,” were sung with reverence into a distorted mic as deep blue lights washed over the stage. The track’s gutting lyrics are a blinking indicator of how Evenson sees the world within this new project. She’s got heavy-hitting questions to ask and isn’t stepping on the brakes any time soon.
The transition into “Where Are You Going? floated in like shimmering light flecks against water ripples. As she held the audience’s gaze, Evenson’s vocals effortlessly swam along the softer tempo of the song and its shiny guitar licks. Written with Nydge, Kim Vi, and Ben Collins, its sweet soundscapes contrasted with the pummeling subject matter of “anxiety, confusion, and aimlessly running towards the unknown,” as Evenson puts it.
“This next song is about sex,” the indie-singer unashamedly announced right after. “One Trick Pony” pushed the audience back into the experimental side of the album, with doses of lush and eerie tones skillfully embedded within the project’s signature crackle. Her glowering stare over the room offered a window into the raw emotion behind her execution of its lines: “When you look at me / Do you like what you see?”
Commanding the room came with ease for Evenson, especially for a cataclysmic ballad like “You Poor Thing.” “I’m gonna point to you guys and you’re gonna scream, okay? Cause I don’t wanna scream a lot,” she conducted the crowd like an orchestra. As if chewing up and spitting out charged lines like, “You fucking poor thing / Golden coaster / Fucking free loader,” she did not dance around her venomous attitude towards the other person. The cathartic snarls and shrieks from the audience at her direction felt like the perfect illustration of artist and listener collaboration in real time–a giving and taking that served as a reminder of why attending live shows remains unparalleled and irreplaceable.
Although the venue was intimate, Evenson sure knew how to fill a room as if it were a grand arena. The album’s namesake track “Blue Super Love” sparked through the amps like a pool of electric syrup that oozed with deadly demand. Her Instagram bio, “scary little songwriter,” rang truer than ever as a wide-eyed audience harmoniously bobbed their heads and clung onto the jabbing words she crooned.
“Johnny” offered a different side of Evenson’s multi-faceted project. “I got a tattoo for it,” she exclaimed to the crowd. “It’s about someone being so terrible, but so beautiful when they sleep.” Fueled with both disdain and awe, the song highlights her ability to create contrasting sonic and lyrical elements. Her starry-eyed delivery of lines like ”Wouldn’t tell the truth / When I asked him why” almost distracts you from the red flag it poses. Her last number “Anything, Anything” concluded the opening set with a mystifying spirit of hope as she swore that this time, she’s actually sure. That there’s beauty in an open-ended book after all.
As quickly as it begun, Evenson’s 30-minute set came to a close. Having drowned the crowd with rushing waves of adrenaline and in-between moments of coming up to breathe in fresh air, everyone was left with a large appetite for more. It was clear she proved to be a dynamic performer and storyteller who’ll keep you on your toes.
Be sure to give Evenson’s latest project BLUE SUPER LOVE a listen, which is now streaming on all of your favorite platforms. If you’re in the LA area, catch her for Kid Sistr’s opening set next month, which you can find tickets for here.
