Still Life Taking the Crowd to Their Castle in Castle Hotel

Still Life is a band that took me to the different place–a place I needed to be. It was a place that they knew well, without knowing that they had brought me into their home. I watched them play at Castle Hotel, Manchester, UK on January 31st 2026. They are a five-piece based in Manchester that gave a fantastic show.

Still Life didn’t kidnap the crowd with their first note or crash of the drums (an executive decision as I found out later). Instead, we fell into the show as they took us by the hand and brought us to their dimension. Ethereal vocals tugged you forward so softly you didn’t even know you were moving. Reminiscently shoegaze guitar and soft, accentuating drums filled the room so completely yet it never felt the need to brag about it.

I spoke to the band briefly after the gig and whilst they are just a group of young people–they were the ones who danced and had fun during the headliner–they know exactly what they are trying to do on-stage.

They know their music has the capabilities of bringing the crowd elsewhere but they seem to be struggling with the length of shows. “Can we do a journey in thirty minutes?” asked drummer Charlie. I provided the answer of an astounding “Yes”. They didn’t tell a story within the thirty minutes; I got taken someplace–and then kicked out during the final song.

At certain points throughout the gig, you knew you had arrived at a point. You didn’t know where but they told you through the pauses and tightening stage presence that the tension was at a max. Each bridge led you to the next part of the journey, it was clear you were still on the way.

There was no sudden arrival point within the gig. It was all obviously about the journey. Things may have reached a maximum during their final number, as you were suddenly ousted from this place that they had brought you to.

The crowd was forced to leave in a much more explosive fashion than the journey there. The vocalist and front woman stepped off of the stage and into the audience whilst her voice carried over every soul in the room. The lengthy notes were so atmospheric you didn’t know what atmosphere you were even in anymore. It was between worlds. Life stilled. One of the guitarists came centre stage and simply rocked back and forth, the entire band knew where they were and let it wash over them leaving the crowd in between spaces and lost.
