Perfume Genius Captures Toronto on the Duo Tour

The atmosphere as the crowd steadily filed into Toronto’s The Great Hall for Perfume Genius was warm and inviting as people found their seats early in the evening, animatedly chatting with old friends and new acquaintances for the night. Following an extensive tour of North America, Europe, and the UK with a full band supporting the release of his latest album, Glory, Perfume Genius has since slowed down for a more intimate run of shows.
Justly named the “Duo Tour”, Perfume Genius is accompanied solely by longtime partner and collaborator Alan Wyffels, with the two sitting back to back in the centre of the stage at their respective keyboards. The show started with the lights down low, each note of the keyboard filling the space with substantial depth as it encompassed the room.
Supported by opener Dan English, the crowd was perfectly primed for the evening to come, each member of the audience closely wrapped in the music. Aptly prefaced by English, Perfume Genius’ set is both “beautiful and devastating", the force of the tracks on the setlist, each personal and teeming with emotion, highlighted by the intimate setting.
An ongoing sense of awe rippled throughout the quiet room as the audience was close to holding their breath through each song, unable to bear the idea of missing a single moment. The only time the audience broke the spell was at the end of every song, each of which were met with an overwhelming chorus of cheers and clapping.
The setlist was dominated by songs off of the 2020 release, Set My Heart On Fire Immediately, each track balanced between the simplicity of the classics the record was inspired by and the profound intimacy of the emotion behind them. Throughout the show, Perfume Genius alternated between standing alone at the front of the stage and sitting at the keyboard with his back to Wyffels, each providing little barrier to the fully enraptured audience.
Hauntingly intimate, Perfume Genius fully embraces the power behind every emotion, using the force of his own stories and experiences to create something beautiful.
