It’s Always Summer in Chicago When Khalid is in Town
After six years of one off shows and various festival appearances, Khalid decided the time was right finally, with his most recent album release after the sun goes down, to set out on the road again. It was a classically cold and windy night at Chicago’s Huntington Bank Pavillion. But nevertheless fans were dedicated to the craft of a cute outfit curated for the event. Without a doubt the merch booth saw a rise in tour hoodie sales. Before the show even got started, the outdoor venue was buzzing. Fans ran around the grounds grabbing merch and stopping at a variety of food stands as well as getting their pre show outfit photos while the sun was still out. It was a lightly sunny day not at all glaring.
LAUV opened up the show with just himself a microphone and an occasional self played guitar guiding his stage presence. He kept his set pretty consistent throughout its duration with a casual exchange of energy between him and the fans. LAUV played a variety of his discography including some fan favorites and radio hits. Throughout his set the sun began to set in Chicago, creating a beautiful pale blue and orange array that deepened throughout the hour.
By the time the sun fully set Khalid was gearing up to start his show. Struck by a little flair for the dramatic, Khalid's set began with a number countdown shining across the screen. “10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1”, the crowd chants in unison. Khalid appeared silhouetted atop a raised stage amidst fog and an orange glowing backdrop. He opened the show with back to back throwbacks to his earlier career days.
The It’s Always Summer Somewhere tour, although correlating to the release of Khalid newest album, felt very much like a culmination of everything the singer has worked towards since he first started growing in popularity in 2017 after releasing American Teen. This tour acted as a love letter to every achievement he has made in the past decade while also managing to show fans the music that they know and love in a new light. With nearly a two and a half hour set of just under forty songs, Khalid hit every era and every important collaboration he has created throughout his career.
Fans were bubbly and happy despite the cold, some even dancing atop their chairs in huddles holding on to one another. All in all the show was packed full of energy, dancers, outfit changes, dynamic lighting, and so much joy.
