Loathe Is No Stranger to Toronto

Fans packed into Toronto’s History late Sunday night, the glowing Loathe - Sold Out sign lighting the sidewalk in front of the building. Right at the beginning of their A Stranger to You North America Tour, Loathe has taken their distinctive sound to a whole new level. Supported by Fleshwater and Prostitute, the room filled up early, the excitement bouncing through the crowd.
The sold out crowd packed into the centre of the floor and lined the balcony, moving and breathing more as a collective unit than as individuals throughout the show. With a strip of lights bordering the edge of the stage, a red curtain shot up to the ceiling as the house lights darkened, the excited chatter in the audience transforming into a buzz of cheers as the members of Loathe each stepped out onto the stage. The second the first chords echoed through the venue, the crowd erupted; jumping, thrashing, and screaming along to the music.
Loathe expands the definition of metal, progressing towards something more eclectic and experimental. A mix of ambient synths and airy vocals define some tracks whereas others are built on the heavy power of house-inspired hardstyle basslines. As the opening lines of each new track started, you could audibly hear the excited gasps that jumped through the audience before the room inevitably became a wall of cheering.
The set started out fast and heavy as the band ripped through the first couple tracks on the setlist, as unrelenting as the continuous surge of crowd surfers falling towards the stage. Rather than a traditional pit opening in the centre of the room, the entire crowd moved in a continuous wave from wall to wall, jumping along to the beat. In between every couple of tracks on the setlist, the stage lights dimmed, giving the audience the chance to catch their breath as the band reset, the crowd repetitively taking the opportunity to ignite into an uncompromising chorus of “Loathe! Loathe! Loathe!” instead.
