Yard Act Brings A Little Music to Toronto
Toronto, Ontario - September 22, 2026
Fans gathered into Toronto’s The Opera House late Tuesday night, the smoke from opener The Armed filling up the room as the crowd steadily grew in size, pushing their way towards the stage in anticipation of the night to come. Having released their debut album in 2022, Yard Act has quickly grown an enthusiastic following, the room buzzing with excited energy as they waited for the band to hit the stage with colourful lights washing over the crowd.
The band was electric from the first track, completely enrapturing the audience with their unique tone, a mix of spoken word that flares into ranting and storytelling, tackling topics like capitalism, gentrification and social class. At the end of the first song, lead singer James Smith set some ground rules, egging the crowd on by declaring that the chilly Canadian Tuesday night was no excuse for anything less than everyone’s full energy, stating that he would not put up with any “Paddington Bears” standing there with their arms crossed.
Formed in Leeds, the band is painted with post-punk flare, the spoken force of the lyrics turning each track into a melty groove of political satire. Rounded out by bassist Ryan Needham, guitarist Sam Shipstone, and drummer Jay Russell, the band blends to create the tight momentum behind each song.
Their latest album, You’re Gonna Need A Little Music dominated the setlist as tracks like “Tall Tales”, “Redeemer” and “Thrill of the Chase” are met with an overwhelming wave of cheers as the opening chords of each track rang out into the audience.
By the time the setlist got to “Empty Pledges”, Smith sounded like he was on the brink of unraveling with the force behind the lyric “Whats wrong with being proud? Whats wrong with being proud?” rattling into the microphone. Each song is littered with an overwhelming sense of disillusionment as the band toes the line into chaos, spitting each track out at the audience.
Kicking off the European leg of the You’re Gonna Need A Little Music tour at the beginning of October, Yard Act is a show you don’t want to miss.
