Still Woozy Showcases Love and Devotion in Newest Album, 'Loveseat'
Ever since the 2018 bedroom-pop craze, 32-year-old Sven Gamsky (who is better known by his moniker– Still Woozy) has been at the forefront of the genre. Gamsky has composed a plethora of psychedelic and mellow hits, beginning with his most popular single, “Lucy,” which was issued in March of 2018. Since then, he has remained dedicated to his craft, and his hard work is extremely evident with the release of his second full-length album, Loveseat.
Still Woozy’s overall sound has remained consistent over the years, and his first album, If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is, was very similar to the several singles that he had previously put out. Loveseat, however, is different in the best ways possible. In this project, Woozy maintains his atmosphere of smooth and mellow melodies but builds upon them– adding interesting distortion, synth, and notable instrumental aspects. He collaborated with several other artists in the production of this album, specifically with Beach Noise on the song “Shit Don’t Change.” Beach Noise has previously worked with artists like Baby Keem, Bakar, and Kendrick Lamar, and their addition of pulsating beats exponentially increases the appeal of this song.
The album opens with “Again.” The song, beginning with a striking alternation of synth chords, does an excellent job of capturing the audience’s attention and signaling the difference in the impending body of work. The chorus repeats, “Again? Again? This can’t be happening,” almost as if Gamsky asks how he finds himself in this compromising position once more. The song ends with wistful and futuristically distorted guitar riffs that sound almost like shooting stars. “Again” is a perfect opening to this album because it plays with punchy sounds that are scarce throughout Woozy’s discography.
Gamsky shows immense personal growth again in the song “Shotput,” where he lovingly describes his now wife and how she took him by surprise. This song, coupled with “Rid of Me” at the end of the album, is especially impactful given the context of the birth of his first child and the beginning of his new family. Both songs are heartfelt exclamations of love and devotion with especially heartwarming lyrics.
As a fan and follower of Still Woozy since the very beginning, his album is a wonderful addition to his work, and it has been incredible to watch his precision and growth over the years. Additional standouts from the album include “Forwards, Run It Back,” “Shit Don’t Change,” and “Baby.” Gamsky’s impeccable songwriting, raw emotion, and gorgeous self-production set him apart from the crowd and have made him a staple in my music rotation for years. Sven Gamsky is so incredibly skilled at what he does, and he has an excellent ability to shed light on love through music in such an eloquent way. Even if you have never listened to his music before, I highly encourage you to give Loveseat a try– you won’t regret it.
