Beabadoobee is Starry-Eyed in Her Bright New Single “Ever Seen”
With yet another single teaser before the release of her next album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves, the Beabadoobee summer everyone has been waiting for is on the horizon. “Ever Seen” entered the scene a week after its announcement, and it’s a sweet track about being entranced by someone who makes you feel seen. The single is coated with a celebratory shimmer and more pop-leaning than the last, but it never strays away from Bea’s artistic fingerprint.
Similarly to “Take A Bite” and “Coming Home,” the indie-pop singer and songwriter had been treating her followers to snippets of the song on social media, which garnered heavy anticipation as people eagerly began setting alarms for drop day. Her album rollout process has been cleverly consistent– she never keeps the fans waiting for too long, putting out a track per month leading up to the new record.
Whether her song indulges in dream-pop or is reminiscent of 2000s rock hooks, the 24-year-old musician remains both boundless and cohesive in her craft. She switches to a bouncier number this time around, her wispy vocals floating along a current of layered instrumentation. Bea’s ode to love and deep infatuation feels like a grand declaration against the plummeting drum beats and larger-than-life-sounding production– which is possibly one of her best yet. Glistering strings and big, anthemic trumpets back the chorus as she gushes, “The highest I think I’ve ever been / Said I had the prettiest eyes he’d ever seen.”
Threaded with notes of introspection, Bea doesn’t refrain from acknowledging patterns she’s dipped into in the past: “It’s been rough, but I’ve felt worse / I’ll pull myself back up, and you know this.” Being known to your core and still loved, for all the good and the bad, is often an unexplainable feeling, and she takes hold of that high in this track brilliantly. She flips the lyric for a cheekily romantic conclusion, softly singing, “I can’t lie, he has the prettiest eyes I’ve ever seen.”
The single’s premiere was made all the more special with a music video directed by her partner Jake Erland following suit. Shot in Japan, the short film is a dreamily intimate depiction of their relationship through his perspective. Its visuals showcase vibrant color-grading and tight shots of Bea against a bustling city, serving almost like his own proclamation of love to her.
It’s clear Bea has a pulse on who she is and wants to be as an artist. “Ever Seen” feels like a mature progression from Beatopia and time spent in the studio with Rick Rubin for the upcoming project. She’s unafraid to explore every facet of her identity as a musician, and it’s what makes her discography so sincere and all the more addicting– an admirable and essential quality to possess as an artist who wants to evolve.
“Ever Seen” is now streaming on all platforms. This Is How Tomorrow Moves arrives on August 16th and is currently available for pre-order.
