Maggie Lindemann Tells The Boy To “Grow a Spine!”
“You’re never gonna get it right / it’s the same thing every time / that boy he needs to grow a spine.”
Friday, August 22nd has been a huge day for Maggie Lindemann fans. Not only did she release the thrilling new single, “spine,” but she also announced her sophomore album i feel everything, slated for release October 17th. This is following the release of the album’s first single, “one of the ones,” from last month.
Lindemann has continually had one of the most fascinatiating sonic evolutions that I can think of. Early in her career, she was a pop princess, but with the release of 2021’s Paranoia, she completely switched gears to a rock-adjacent sound. This sound has broadened and intertwined all sorts of genres in the past few years— her projects since are a testament to her talent and evolution as an artist as well as person. “spine,” the second single and second track on the album is the perfect end-of-summer banger. Lindemann has perfected the addictive feeling that pop delivers, while still keeping it in her signature alternative sound. The twinkly guitar feels like something straight out of 2000s, staying very on brand for her.
“spine” speaks about bravery— or the lack thereof. The expertly crafted lyrics are held together with the most delicious blend of alternative and pop. The lyrics feel exhausted, but the track itself feels anything but. Lindemann is tired of the same thing over and over, but it’s obvious that in this new era, she’s truly back and better than ever. Each time I think she’s in her artistic prime, she proves me wrong with something even more amazing.
I haven’t been able to stop singing, “that boy he needs to grow a spine!” It’s the most delicious ear worm that stays with you though the day, and one that makes you want to dance a little. August is the perfect month for this track. It holds that finality that the end of summer always done— a little remorse at things coming to a close, but also ready to move onto something new (at least for me— someone who despises the summer months.) Lindemann is consistently proving that it’s only going up from here!
