On Love & Crushing Heartbreak: Olivia Rodrigo’s you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love
“They say modern love’s a cruel endeavor / And to that I say, ‘Fuck it, whatever.’” Olivia Rodrigo is no stranger to publicly exposing her bleeding wounds and then stitching them back together herself in pursuit of emotional self-preservation. Her latest album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, is the perfect example of such a cycle: the body of work is a wound, exposed and still healing. Still trickling blood after the trauma inflicted upon it left a lasting impression, while her hand then threads a dull needle, slicing through the untouched skin encompassing the wound, creating even more trauma to the surrounding area in hopes of turning the anguish into a battle scar or a lesson learned. It’s a violent catharsis.
The album itself is split into two broader sections: the first half being sickly-sweet love from that familiar early-relationship glow; the second being its expiration. Opening with the dreamy synth-pop single “drop dead,” the project immediately careens into new love that has butterflies incessantly fluttering inside your stomach: “You’re lookin’ like an angel on the walls of Versailles / The most alive I’ve ever been / But kiss me, and I might drop dead.” It’s obsessive, ignoring all signs from the universe that it’s not meant to be: “Pisces and a Gemini / But I think we might go really nice together.”
The next track, “stupid song,” leans even more into lightheaded infatuation: “I feel right, I feel wrong, I feel totally insane / And I want you more than any stupid song could ever say.” Although it starts slowly, there’s a buildup that gradually grows into something explosive as the song becomes even more confessional: “Dream of you from like 1 to 4 / Positively and truly sure / Nobody’s wanted somebody more / It’s a thing that I can’t ignore / Tell your friends that you’re mine, I’m yours / With a hand on my heart, I swore.”
The first section reaches its true peak with “honeybee,” the album’s ultimate love song, before descending into affection-induced delirium for the rest of it. The piano and string quartet create an intimate, yet cinematic, arrangement within “honeybee”: “It’s too hard to describe this / In a way that feels honest / But even when I’m quiet / I love you, baby, I promise.”
“maggots 4 brains,” “u + me = <3,” and “my way” immediately turn the mood around. “maggots 4 brains” is reminiscent of Paramore’s signature pop-punk sound. “u + me = <3” brings in the innocent optimism of The Cure’s “Friday I’m In Love.” And “my way” brings back the bratty attitude and sassy lyrical quips from Rodrigo’s previous album Guts.
The second section of you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love reveals where heartbreak can grow within a relationship. “purple” grows anxious, opening space for the first glimpse of something going wrong: “I had big dreams ‘til I tied myself to you / Now I’m all-consumed.”
Although most of Rodrigo’s songs involve some level of self-reflection, “the cure” might just be the most introspective track from this album: “And my head is full of poison, and my heart is full of doubt / I got toxins in my bloodstream, you tried hard to suck ‘em out / And it feels like medication, and it’s good for me, I’m sure / But it don’t matter how your love feels anymore / It will never be the cure.” The realization that love won’t fix your problems hits you in the face.
The next three tracks, “begged,” “what’s wrong with me,” and “less,” dive further into the downturn of this relationship. “begged” is an acoustic ballad that harps on the idea that having to ask for affection will make it feel empty once it does come: “Is that a normal thing to fight back the waves / Of a static lover’s dread? / I’m overwhelmed, I’m underfed / And yet I still cling.” “what’s wrong with me,” a duet with Robert Smith, delves into losing yourself post-breakup, and “less” is a piano-led track that begs to keep a failing relationship afloat: “If loving me means letting go and wishing me the best / The I guess / I wish, I wish, I wish you loved me less.”
The transition from “less” to “expectations” is jarring in the best possible way. The track radiates confidence and twists what used to be rose-colored memories into something laughable: “I’m not kissing any boy that is passive / Their indecision is painfully unattractive / Past mistakes are just new information / These days, I’ve got expectations.”
The album closes with “cigarette smoke,” an almost six-minute-long acoustic track that grows sadder and sadder: “Tell me something honest so the memories turn dark / You said that I made loving look easy / ‘Til I made it hard/ Give me back my time and I will give you back your heart / I thought that we played the perfect couple / ‘Til you didn’t want the part.” When you let it sit, you realize it just might be the biggest heartbreak on the album.
