Japanese Breakfast announced a new album, here’s everything we know about it so far
There’s a lot of reasons to be a melancholy brunette or a sad woman (or both), but a lack of new music coming this spring is not one of them—especially following the announcement of For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), Japanese Breakfast’s fourth studio album.
On January 7, Japanese Breakfast, an indie band with origins in 2013, announced on socials that they would be returning to the scene four long years after their last record. The group unveiled the upcoming album’s cover art, announced that its lead single, ‘Orlando in Love’ is now available for streaming, and finally, declared that the rest of the album will follow suit in late March.
A day later, the band added that they will be taking the album on tour across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe. Performances will kick off on September 9, and include stops at well-known music festivals like Coachella.
For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), was produced by Grammy Award winner Blake Mills, who has worked with other indie powerhouse acts like Fiona Apple and Perfume Genius. The album was recorded at popular Los Angeles recording studio, Sound City.
‘Orlando in Love,’ which was released with an accompanying music video, is two minutes and 26 seconds of delicious Virginia Woolf references, scene panting through descriptive lyrics and a name-drop of the album’s title. The last minute-ish of the song is instrumental strings with layered vocals calling out the protagonist's name. The video matches the dreamy artistic tone of the song, with visuals alluding to the famous painting, the Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli.
In addition to ‘Orlando in Love,’ the album will feature, eight other songs:
‘Here is Someone’
‘Honey Water’
‘Mega Circuit’
‘Little Girl’
‘Leda’
‘Picture Window’
‘Men in Bars’
‘Winter in LA’
‘Magic Mountain’
So far, the navy blue moodiness of the album’s title, cover art and lead single insinuate that For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women) will deviate from the record’s predecessor, ‘Jubilee,’ a the bright and bubbly album that featured hits like ‘Be Sweet.’
Get out your dark box-die and most depressing facial expressions for sad girl spring, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women) is out on March 21.
