Benches Set the Stage @ Delmar Hall in St. Louis

st. louis, missouri - april 13, 2024

From the moment San Diego-based group Benches took the stage in St. Louis with their latest single “Naive,” it was clear that they were on a mission to set the tone for the night. Opening for I Don’t Know How But They Found Me, Benches brought a significant spark to the atmosphere of Delmar Hall. The crowd continued to find ways to move to the music, basking in the infectious energy from the band despite standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the sold-out venue.

The eight-song set carried listeners on a journey of the band’s experimentation with alternative rock and their creation of self-proclaimed ‘bench rock.’ These songs portray the ups and downs of the relationships we make, the experiences we have and the lives we live, topped with raw passion and a hint of nostalgia. While the sound resembles rock of the early 2000s, Benches adds a new level of intensity to their music that causes a fire to ignite within those who are fortunate enough to observe their live performance.

Anticipation–in the form of excited cheers–surged through the audience as lead vocalist Anson Kelley introduced an unreleased, untitled song halfway into the set. In this moment, when all you can do is sit back and listen, you can truly appreciate the musicianship of the band and the way they work together in genuine talent. From the authenticity of the lyrics, to powerful vocals and skillful bass lines, it’s difficult to keep from getting lost in the music.

Commanding the attention of a full house can be tedious, but this group made it look like just another Saturday night. Their songs provided elements that allowed attendees to connect, even if they were hearing Benches for the first time that night. Relatability, honesty, reflection. Exploring these themes of relationships, society, and mental illness in such a way that calls the listener to keep thinking after the music stops–and that is what makes them stand out.
As Benches jumped from the slow, steady “It Doesn’t Have to Change” to upbeat fan favorites “Monodrama” and “Violent” at the close of their set, fans erupted into endless noise and applause. They succeeded in their mission of making their mark on the evening, leaving an impression on St. Louis and setting the stage for the act to follow. After witnessing their talent, there’s no doubt that this crowd hopes to hear Benches back in their area again soon.
