Young Culture is out on their headlining tour following the release of their recent EP All Weapons Formed Against Me Have Prospered. They stopped in Jacksonville, FL on October 6, performing at Hard Love, a new local venue. The night felt bittersweet with fans gathering to hear the new EP, as well as some old heavy hitters.
The pop-punk group from Albany, NY, started by friends Alex Magnan and Gabe Pietrafesa, have been writing and playing music for nearly a decade now. “This EP was written as an open letter of apology. We hope you can learn from it, show yourself grace, and understand that it’s okay to make mistakes. Just learn from them. You guys watched us grow up, that’s beautiful,” posted the band on Instagram.
Opening the show with support from Bike Routes and Wakelee, members of Young Culture were hanging out in the crowd singing along and supporting their friends. This small, intimate show gave everyone the opportunity to interact.
The room went dark and the stage lit up as an upbeat opening track filled the speakers. The crowd began to cheer as the four members walked on the stage, including singer Alex Magnan, guitarist Gabe Pietrafesa, bassist Mackenzie Clarke, and drummer Simon Hatziioannou. Starting the show off with “Better off as Friends” the room was immediately ignited with pure energy. Everyone was dancing, headbanging, and jumping. With this tour being their longest Young Culture set, they played the new EP, including songs “Broken Paper Plane”, “Graduate”, and “Terrible Creatures”. They also played songs like “Party Girl”, from the first album, that Alex said he wrote when he was 16.

After a technical difficulty early in the show caused them to pause, lead singer Alex suggested he play something acoustic until the issue was resolved. Grabbing his guitar, he asked the crowd what he should sing as a fan in the front quickly shouted “Smooth”. “That was smooth,” said Gabe. Alex laughed, explaining that was an old song he wasn’t sure he remembered the words to. He went for it anyway, creating a very intimate few minutes with the crowd. The crowd sang along as Alex poured his heart into the song. Things picked up right where they left off after the brief issue.
Watching a performance of Young Culture, you'll likely leave with one main thought, they are truly having fun. Smiles would not leave their face as they performed to the crowd with their bandmates. “Thank you for being a part of this family,” said Alex, continuously showing his gratitude to everyone there. The show concluded with a performance of “Drift”, giving it everything they had. Hugging friends and fans in the front, it was an emotional moment for those mourning the end.
Young Culture has a few dates left on their final tour, with the last stop in their hometown, Albany, NY. Tickets are still available on their website.
