K.Flay Makes Friends with the Silence in Toronto
march 10, 2025 - toronto, canada
K.Flay is a force to be reckoned with from the second she steps on stage until the end of her headlining set at Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall. Starting off as a projection on the screen, before stepping up behind the screen itself, the opening track “Bar Soap” pulls the audience into her world, building the anticipation as they wait for her to break the barrier and fully step out onto the stage.
Wasting absolutely no time, K.Flay states her intention for the show very early - that everyone leaves feeling refreshed and powerful, as the crowd comes together to celebrate not only the music, but their strength as individuals as well. The energy in the music is reflected on stage, and into the audience, as K.Flay dances, runs, and boxes throughout the setlist with the crowd jumping and singing along.
The setlist has something for every fan, as the energy is pushed through the venue with older songs like “The President has a Sex Tape” off of Every Where is Some Where before moving into “Shy” and “Irish Goodbye” from her most recent full length album, Mono. Taking some time to reflect back on the beginning of her career, the backing band leaves the stage for a moment as K.Flay stands alone with a beat machine, setting it on the fly before rapping out to the audience.
K.Flay takes the time to delve into the background of her latest EP, I’m Making Friends with the Silence, which started as a project to create softer versions of tracks off of Mono after realizing that her experience with hearing loss made the record difficult for her to listen to. She expressed that the EP was reflective of part of her grieving process, that accepting the sudden hearing loss she experienced in 2022 was part of her healing process, even as she had to initially deal with the uncertainty of her future as a musician.
Both the slowed down versions of “Are You Serious?” and “Chaos is Love” were greeted with the same excitement as every other track on the setlist, followed by the soft version of “Punisher” which transformed into the heavier version originally released on Mono. It is very clear how much the music means to K.Flay as she graces the stage, but that doesn’t stop her from having a bit of cheeky fun with a cover of The Beatles “I Am A Walrus”.
The night ends with fan favourites “Blood in the Cut”, “Carsick”, and “High Enough” before slowing down once more for “Perfectly Alone” as K.Flay slips off the stage during the final notes of the song. Almost halfway through her North American tour, she has announced this will be her last tour for a while as she prepares to get cochlear implants. This certainly is not a night to miss as K.Flay puts on an unforgettable show for every fan.
