Mac DeMarco’s Return to Chicago Starts A Sold-Out Mac Mosh

After not playing a Chicago show in four years, Mac DeMarco made a strong comeback with the sold-out concert he played at the Salt Shed. As doors opened, fans flooded into a space where familiarity and nostalgia were about to run rampant, since Demarco’s music is a force that has carried a lot of us throughout our upbringings.

Opener Mock Media kicked off the night and set a very specific tone. Their performance was packed with personality, style, and ease. Their music only amplified the energetic buzz of a crowd ready to watch one of their favorite artists of the last multiple decades take the stage.

Mac DeMarco came out, and the sold-out Salt Shed crowd let out a roar like they’d been waiting for this moment their whole lives. He kicked off the set with Shining from his recent album, Guitar, and followed with For The First Time from his iconic 2017 record, This Old Dog. Every song he played, no matter which record it came from, had crowds singing along to every word. A truly special night had just begun for an artist who has dedicated decades to his craft. It’s clear that DeMarco and his band weren’t up on stage doing anyone any favors. They were having a blast, and the crowd could feel that energy. 

DeMarco would throw is microphone into the air, catch it, swing it like a lasso, and throughout it all, his musical ability never once faltered. His vocals were on point, his guitar strumming in time, and his crowd was absolutely ecstatic to experience the talent and skill on stage. 

DeMarco took the crowd through his entire discography. He played songs from his first record, titled Rock and Roll Night Club, from 2012. He bounced through his other notable records, including 2, Salad Days, and Another One, to name a few. Each era he played through flooded audience members with energy and nostalgia, since DeMarco has been a staple household name since he changed the indie rock genre forever in 2012.

Something many wouldn’t ever even dream of seeing also took place, with DeMarco playing the chorus to his number 1 single, “Freaking Out The Neighborhood” so many times that it started a mosh pit.
