Chanpan’s Music Is for the People

What does it feel like to have a melody cut through thick air and worm itself into your chest cavity?

Being at a Chanpan show answers all of these questions.
Running through, now, cult-classic songs like “endlessly” and “Jungle,” to teasing new music with their song “Speculations,” Chanpan kept the energy high throughout the night. It’s impossible not to feel urgently possessed to move your body when you hear Chanpan live.
Blue light flooded the Constellation Room, washing over every member of the crowd and band, titrating the mood of the set from club-like, dreamlike, and back to club-like. It feels like you are part of an exhibition team at the top of a summit; Chanpan is a breath of fresh air in a sea of pop music, and you know you are a part of something special.
With themes of collective power, unity, autonomy, love, and freedom, Chanpan’s lyricism hit especially hard live. When you hear their lyrics paired with the physical sensations of feeling your feet on the ground in the Constellation Room, feeling the bass rumbling and ripping through your throat, and seeing the members dancing and jumping into the crowd, there is something that happens psychosomatically that feels incredibly powerful.
Chanpan also demonstrated (and continues to demonstrate) a strong devotion to community building, social justice, and unity: themes that are perfectly in line with their lyrics. Calling the attention of the full room of showgoers before their set started, they then redirected the attention back onto local community nonprofits, Chispa and Sunrise, operating in Orange County to talk about the increasing presence of Flock cameras popping up around OC. The two nonprofit speakers talked about the uptick in surveillance without a population’s consent having direct ties to systems of oppression that affect us all, and especially historically disenfranchised communities. They ended with a direct call to action to chat with them at Chanpan’s merch booth to learn how to volunteer and organize with them.
Their dedication to live music and performance and to their commitment to local communities in the cities they perform in across the country drives the point home; Chanpan is by the people, for the people.
