Fry Your Brain With The Maine | 4/21/2018
The Technicolors, an alternative indie band from Phoenix, AZ, opened up the Columbus show with energy and spirit. Those who turned out early matched that vivacity. While not everyone in the packed room may have known the words to the songs, they grooved along to the music just the same.
Los Angeles’ The Wrecks soon followed. The five-piece alternative rock act kept the energy level at 11 the entire set. Frontman Nick Anderson joined the crowd multiple times throughout the set, and had the audience captivated from the time he stepped on stage. A cover of ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl?’ by Jet in the middle of the set converted the few who may have been hesitant at the beginning. Before closing with ‘Favorite Liar’, the band asked the audience who would want to join the band had they come back to Columbus. The question was answered with resounding applause.
The Maine needed no introduction, the entire sold-out crowd knew who they were. Most of the fans in attendance were decked out in the band’s merchandise. As the band began playing their first song, “Diet Soda Society”, the audience came alive. Singing, dancing, and thoroughly enjoying the music. The band played a couple of older songs that have been missing from recent setlists, “Growing Up” and the powerful “Misery”, the latter of which made this girl cry. Between songs, singer John O’Callaghan remarked that this was one of the biggest shows that the band has played, which was apparent throughout the evening when the audience’s vocals nearly overpowered the audio of the speakers.
To close the show, the band played fan-favorite “Another Night on Mars”. This song is always especially fitting, as the shows are always like a family reunion for fans, including myself, who get to spend time with those friends that they may only get to see at these shows.
