Baby Queen’s Bedroom Session @ Rough Trade East

London, october 1st, 2023

Ahead of releasing her debut album in November, BABY QUEEN is completing a run of acoustic ‘bedroom session’ shows around the UK to give the fans a taste of what’s to come. For those at Sunday night’s set in London’s world famous Rough Trade East record store, it was an intimate evening of soul-bearing acoustic versions of her debut record tracks, most of which were brand new to the fans.

Taking over London’s anarchic anti-pop scene in 2020 and then featuring on the soundtrack of Netflix’s Heartstopper, BABY QUEEN has taken the scene by storm with her songs about falling out of love with social media, moving across the world and growing up pains.

With only BABY QUEEN herself and a bandmate on guitar and piano, the 50-minute set featured the highlights of her upcoming debut record, “Quarter Life Crisis”. She started the set with the unreleased “Kid Genius”, an introspective track about how she views herself while trying to create art. The second song was Die Alone, which she said came out of the gutting line ‘Everyone for someone / No one for me’, followed by the already released “Dream Girl”, which had the Baby Kingdom (the name for her fans) singing ‘Does he tell you that you are the queen? / Does he make you sad and is he mean? / Does he give you everything you need? / And baby, do you ever think of me?’ back to her.

She continued with “Grow Up”, centring on the instability that comes with being in your twenties while still feeling like a teenager. ‘It’s only going to get more depressing,’ she said as she started “Letter To Myself At 17” and then “Obvious”, a gut-wrenching track about moving across the world at 18 to chase her dreams and the pain of releasing what you’ve left behind and how life moves on without you.

She continued on the piano to play the title track of the album, “Quarter Life Crisis”. The 270-person crowd sang back every word, with the lyrics ‘It's a quarter life crisis/ All of my vices, rise to the surface / They're workin' the night shift’ and ‘Man, I guess all my overthinkin' / Didn't make me very smart / How can I focus on the future / When I'm one foot in the past?’ hitting deep with the audience.

The final song of the set was fan favourite “We Can Be Anything”. With a little crowd interaction and BABY QUEEN back on guitar, she ended the set on a high note. It was a collaborative effort to sing the song, with the audience being given lyrics to sing back at her while she played her electric pink guitar. The Baby Kingdom certainly left Rough Trade with even more excitement for the new album after hearing these acoustic versions of the songs and BABY QUEEN’s message: ‘We can bе anything (We can be anything) / That's awesome, don't you think? (That's awesome, don't you think?)’

Quarter Life Crisis is out on 10th November 2023. Pre-order here.
